Salt Lake Community College Statement on the Solomon Amendment and Data Sharing

Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is committed to upholding the principles of access, equity, and inclusivity in all aspects of its operations. This commitment extends to our practices when sharing data in accordance with the Solomon Amendment.

The Solomon Amendment (10 U.S.C. § 983) is a federal law that requires colleges and universities to provide access to certain student directory information for military recruitment purposes. SLCC recognizes the importance of respecting student privacy while balancing mandates under federal law, in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The requirements under the Solomon Amendment supersede many FERPA protections, however, students may submit a request through the Office of the Registrar and Academic Records by submitting the "Prevent Disclosure of Directory Information Form" to withhold their information.

Salt Lake Community College offers the following in accordance with the Solomon Amendment:

  • Student's full name;
  • Address;
  • Phone number;
  • Institutional Email address;
  • Date of Birth;
  • Place of Birth;
  • Level of Education;
  • Major or field of study; and
  • Educational Institution of most recent enrollment.

Military recruiters may request this information once each term or semester, for each of the twelve (12) eligible military units. Students included in these student lists must meet specific criteria, including being currently enrolled for at least one credit and being a U.S. citizen with a U.S. address.

We are prohibited from providing the following information under the Solomon Amendment per the Amendment and FERPA:

  • Social Security Numbers;
  • Race/ethnicity/nationality;
  • Grades, GPA, or QPA;
  • Loan status (including default);
  • Veteran status;
  • Religious affiliation; and
  • Information about students who are no longer enrolled (drop out/stop out).
