Program Overview
Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant is the first step in becoming successful in any health care field.
This program provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to meet the State of Utah Nursing Assistant certification requirements. Students learn the duties and responsibilities of a nursing assistant to provide for the physical, physiological, and psychological needs of patients within a hospital or long-term care facility.
The curriculum includes an overall introduction to human relations, anatomy, physiology, and bacteriology, as well as consideration of body mechanics, disease processes, and therapeutic approaches. Skills learned include (but are not limited to) communication, infection prevention, universal precautions, positioning and ambulation, monitoring vital signs, hygiene/grooming, feeding, toileting, and bathing.

Hybrid Class - We are open the hours listed below, and students have the freedom to choose when to come in and document participation.Students must spend a minimum of 4 hours per week on Campus for tests and skills demonstrations in order to make adequate progress.
Monday - Thursday: 10am-8 pm Fridays 9 am - 4 pm - These hours are for Clinical Hours.

Clinicals
Students are required to attend 3 Clinical Shifts, which need to be scheduled with instructor prior to attending. CPR Card & Scrubs Required
Hybrid Class - Students will meet together 5 hours per week and then be expected to put in another 8 hours per week on their own. This will be an 8-week course.

Requirements
Admissions Requirements
Must be 16 years old at enrollment. 18 years old to work in hospitals, but younger students may obtain employment in long-term care settings.
Academic Readiness Requirements
Must be able to speak, read, and write in the English language at the 8th Grade Level to ensure patient safety and effective communication with the healthcare team.
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Clear Tuberculosis Test (either Quantiferon Gold test OR 2Step PPD)
- If a positive TB Test, then a clean chest X-Ray is required.
- Should be done prior to class start date
- Clear Background Check - ordered on Day 1
- Clean Drug Screen - ordered on Day 1
- Not listed on the sex offender web site
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 50 pounds.
- Students must be capable of bending, kneeling, stooping, and standing for long periods to perform essential nursing functions safely.
- Transportation to/from clinicals sites around the Salt Lake Valley.
Course/Program Delivery Model
The Hybrid Program at our Jordan Campus is offered in a Competency Based Education format. This allows students at the Jordan campus to complete the program as soon as competency is demonstrated. Students are expected to invest a minimum of 8 hours per week on coursework to demonstrate adequate progress. 4 of those hours must be in-person in the lab.
The Program at our West Valley Center is cohort-based and delivered in a traditional lecture-based format and will take 16 weeks, meeting daily for a few hours per day, Monday - Thursday with Friday as an open lab for practice.
The Program at our Herriman Campus is a combination of the two above. Students meet for 5 hours per week together practicing and demonstrating skills. Students ALSO spend 8 more hours per week on homework and personal practice. This pace allows students to complete in 8 weeks.
All locations result in a letter grade and 3 Semester Credits on your SLCC transcript.
