Medical assistants work primarily in doctors’ offices and other care clinics as a key member of the allied healthcare team.

You receive training in both the administrative and clinical areas of medical assistance so you can work to keep the offices and clinics of numerous health professionals running smoothly under the direction of a physician. Administrative duties you may perform include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes. Clinical duties you may perform include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed. Our curriculum helps students gain competency in cognitive, psychomotor and affective competencies.

  • Exhibit basic skills of a medical assistant including: obtaining vital signs, phlebotomy, pharmacology, EKG, and assisting providers with specialty examinations.

Immunizations

Working in a healthcare setting there are risks of contracting diseases and risks of sharing diseases with vulnerable populations, like the elderly. To minimize all risks, our clinical partners require several vaccinations and immunizations to be documented before you can work with them. The required immunizations are:

  1. Tuberculosis Test – TB is a dangerous lung disease that can be transmitted through the air from one person to the next. Based on previous experience, international students who have been immunized for TB will want to take the Quantiferon Test to avoid a false positive result from the 2-Step PPD test.
    1. Either a 2-Step PPD. For the first step, you will get an injection, and then 48 to 72 hours later, you will need to go back to the doctor to check your injection site. This process is repeated for step 2 within 1 – 3 weeks after the 1st one.
    2. Or a Quantiferon Test, which involves a single blood draw (suggested for students who may have been previously immunized to TB).

If either comes back positive, the student will need a chest x-ray to demonstrate that they are negative for TB.

  1. Hepatitis-B – Healthcare workers are at a higher risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens such as Hepatitis B. The Hep B vaccination will help prevent you from contracting the disease if exposed. Hep B can cause liver failure and death.
    1. 1st Dose on Day 1
    2. 2nd Dose a month later
    3. 3rd Dose given 4 months later after the 2nd one.
    4. Hepatitis-B titer is required for proof of immunization as well prior to starting the externship.
  2. TDaP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Whooping Cough)) – This vaccine protects against three diseases caused by three types of bacteria. Working in healthcare, you may be exposed to these diseases.
    1. 1 Dose on Day 1. Must have been completed within the last 10 years to be accepted.
  3. MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) – (proof of two dose vaccination or proof of immunity by titer)
  4. Varicella (Chickenpox) - proof of two dose vaccination or proof of immunity by titer.
    1. A letter from the physician stating childhood exposure will not be accepted.
  5. Influenza (given October 1 - March 31) - required yearly.

The following are recommended Immunizations, but not required:

Covid immunization– Proof of two dose immunization. If not immunized, a face shield and/or mask may be worn during the clinical shifts as per clinic site requirements.

Background Check, Drug Screening, and Immunizations Compliance

Salt Lake Technical College has contracted the services from American DataBank utilizing a comprehensive tool for student screening, immunizations, and compliance. This tool, named Complio, is configured to screen for each of the items listed above based on SLTech requirements. Students need to create an account with Complio during program orientation and SLTC will be notified when compliance has been met.

The Hybrid Program at our Jordan Campus is offered in a Competency Based Education (CBE) format. This allows students at the Jordan campus to accelerate and complete the courses as soon as competency is demonstrated. Students will be expected to invest a minimum of 12-18 hours per week (2-3 hours per day) on coursework and will enroll in each course according to the established sequence in the catalog. Of those expected hours, (in bold) Students are required to document 5 hours on campus each week to receive help, take exams, pass off skills, and to show adequate progress in their courses.

The Course at the West Valley campus is cohort-based and delivered in a lecture-based format and will take 2 semesters plus the externship hours.

Either model of instruction will result in a letter grade and 28 Semester Credits on your SLCC transcript.
