Program Details
This study abroad course in Mexico City is an interdisciplinary course centered on Broken Spears, where students will engage deeply with Indigenous perspectives on the Spanish conquest while critically examining themes of history, memory, and cultural continuity. Mexico City itself serves as a living classroom, where layers of the past and present coexist. students will explore historic and archaeological sites embedded within the modern urban landscape, visible yet often overlooked. The program includes visits to and classes at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), as well as guided research at the Archivo General de la Nación, where students will work directly with primary sources. Through on-site observation, collaborative inquiry, and reflective analysis, participants will develop a more nuanced understanding of Mexico’s complex cultural and historical identity.

Program Costs
Billable amounts are what students pay to SLCC and the Engaged Learning Office for facilitating the study abroad program (e.g. accommodations, activities, some meals, etc.).
Non-billable amounts are the amount that students need to pay for themselves to participate in the program. The amounts shown on the table below are rough estimates on these items and each student will need to budget according to their individual needs.

Participants are required to purchase their own flights. The Engaged Learning Office will provide dates and flight information of faculty members so participants can plan accordingly.
Note: Participants are only required to purchase round trips to and from their program destination.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this program, all participants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a current SLCC student
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.0
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Have a valid passport
- Provide proof of ability to travel outside of the United States and return safely
- Provide proof of health insurance
Courses
After being accepted into the program, participants will be eligible to register for INTL 2900: Experiencing Latin America (3 credits) for the Spring 2027 semester.

Cancellation & Withdraw
If you need to withdraw from a Study Abroad program, you may be refunded depending on how far in advance you are withdrawing. There are costs associated with each program. Some of these costs are non-refundable. Advanced payments on each student's behalf may not be reimbursed if a student withdraws or is unable to participate. Students are responsible for all non-refundable advanced payments. If a student is unable to participate for any reason, SLCC reserves the right to determine the amount of refund, if any.
