This AutoCAD Fundamentals course is designed to equip students with essential 2D drafting and design skills using Autodesk’s industry-standard software. This hands-on AutoCAD training introduces learners to the core tools, interface, and workflows used in technical drawing and digital design across architecture, engineering, and manufacturing fields.

Whether you're just starting your design journey or looking to build a strong foundation before advancing to specialized tools like Civil 3D or Revit, this course provides the practical skills and confidence needed to succeed in today’s digital design environment.

What You Will Learn

  • Apply basic drafting techniques to create 2-dimensional mechanical and architectural drawings
  • Draw with accuracy using tool icons, shortcut commands, and menus
  • Insert existing content into new drawings
  • Manage viewports, layouts, printing, and plotting settings

This 48-hour course meets twice a week over an eight-week period. Students develop the foundational skills needed to use AutoCAD tools to create technical drawings. Through hands-on application, students learn to navigate the AutoCAD interface and use fundamental drawing commands and techniques to create 2D drawings. As a result of this training student will be able to apply basic drafting techniques to create 2-dimensional mechanical and architectural drawings; draw with accuracy using tool icons, shortcut commands, and menus; insert existing content into new drawings; and manage viewports, layouts, printing, and plotting settings.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Apply basic drafting techniques to create 2-dimensional mechanical and architectural drawings.
  2. Draw with accuracy using tool icons, shortcut commands, and menus
  3. Insert existing content into new drawings.
  4. Manage viewports, layouts, printing, and plotting settings.
Classroom resources and system requirements

Your tuition includes a textbook, access to AutoCAD software, and dedicated class time to complete assignments with instructor support.

For online students and those completing homework at home, please ensure your computer meets the system requirements for running the software. You can find the official specifications here:

*We recommend participants have dual monitors or a mobile device that they can display the ebook, Canvas, and instructor demonstrations on while using their primary monitor for the AutoCAD software.

Microcredential Upon Completion 

Upon successful completion of the AutoCAD Fundamentals program, students will receive:

  • An official Autodesk Certificate of Completion for AutoCAD Fundamentals
  • A Workforce Training Microcredential issued by SLCC

These certificates demonstrate your technical proficiency in AutoCAD software and your ability to create accurate 2D drawings and documentation. It can be a valuable addition to your resume or LinkedIn profile to showcase your software skills to employers in design, drafting, and related fields.

The AutoCAD Fundamentals training is eligible for Short Term Intensive Training (STIT) funding to cover 50% of tuition costs. This financial aid option makes our affordable training even more accessible.

What is STIT Funding?

Short Term Intensive Training (STIT) funding pays up to 50% of training costs for multiple programs leading to high-demand careers. This educational funding is available for Utah residents and is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

How to Apply for STIT Funding

To see if you qualify for this tuition assistance program:

  1. Check your eligibility by clicking the STIT funding link
  2. Follow the steps to complete and submit your application
  3. If approved, you will receive instructions to register for your selected program

Important Notes

  • Funding is based on Utah residency
  • You must complete a STIT application to determine eligibility
  • STIT funding is limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis
  • This funding supports job-ready skills training for in-demand occupations

Follow these simple steps to register for AutoCAD Fundamentals Training:

Create a profile in the registration system

  1. Select Register Now next to your chosen program. This will take you to enrole.com/slcc.
  2. Select Sign In.
  3. If you are a returning student, login to the registration system and skip to step 6.
  4. Select CREATE PROFILE and enter your personal information. Be sure to review and accept the Financial Responsibility statement. Provide accurate contact details for program communications.
  5. Select Submit to save your information and login to the registration system.

Apply for funding

  1. If you do not qualify or are not interested in tuition assistance skip to step 13.
  2. Towards the bottom of the blue menu, select Funding Sources for Eligible Programs. Select STIT.
  3. Select Register.
  4. A shopping cart with the funding application is added. Select Next.
  5. A form displays. Enter required information and then select Next>.
  6. Confirm your selection and then click Submit.
  7. Your application will be reviewed. Wait at least 2 business days for an email with the status of your application. If approved, the email will contain a discount code.
  8. Note: Do NOT register for the training until you have received an email of approved/denied status of tuition assistance.

Register for training

  1. Navigate to AutoCAD Fundamentals Workforce Microcredential
  2. Select the first training of the series (if there is more than one required).
  3. Select Register.
  4. If you plan to register and pay for the rest of the training in the program, select Continue Shopping and repeat steps 15-16 until all training is added, otherwise skip to step 17.
  5. Enter discount code (if approved), and then click Apply Discount Code.
  6. Select Next and the remaining prompts to enter your payment information, ending with Submit.
