English as a Second Language  is eligible for the Mastering ESL Scholarship designed to financially assist students who are enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at SLCC. This scholarship is worth up to $300 during the Fall 2024 semester. The ESL Program at Salt Lake Technical College offers six levels of ESL instruction leading to SLTC certificate programs or SLCC degree programs. A placement test is given to determine the level at which a student should begin. Placement tests are arranged at the time students seek to register for the program. ESL classes include intensive academic English practice in reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.

The mission of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Salt Lake Community College is to improve students' English language skills which will help them successfully develop personally, professionally, and academically at Salt Lake Community College.

Basic Skills Courses: Hours vary depending on student needs.

  1. Apply to SLCC
    Complete an online Application for Admission.
  2. Complete Orientation
    You can complete an orientation in person or online.
  3. Take ESL Placement Test
    Determine what level fits you best for ESL classes.
  4. Make an Appointment with an Academic Advisor
    Meet with an advisor after completing the assessment.
  5. Pay Tuition
    Pay tuition at Cashier Services before registering for courses.
  6. Register for Courses in MySLCC.

International Students

International students (students on a nonimmigrant visa) must complete the International Student Application for admission through the International Student Services before being able to enroll.

  • Tuition: Based on $90 per technical credit hour
  • Student Fees: $9 per technical credit hour
  • Lab Fees: $0.00 for each language lab
  • Books: $61.75 - $202.25 per level - ask instructor prior to purchasing books
  • International Student Tuition and Fees is $784 (not including books and International Application fee) for a total of 8 credit hours per semester

ESL Placement

The ESL Placement is used to determine your knowledge in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It determines the appropriate level of courses based on your ability. The test is administered online at SLCC Testing Services.

 

Financial Aid

  • ESL courses are not eligible for VA.
  • ESL(TESL) courses qualify for some SLCC scholarships.

Additional Program Notes

Because all classes are now offered individually, there are no required minimum hours of enrollment (EXCEPT for International Visa students who must attend full-time).
