Program Overview
The ESL Program at Salt Lake Technical College offers five levels of ESL instruction leading to SLTC certificate programs or SLCC degree programs. The Versant English Placement Test is given to determine the level at which a student should begin. Testing is arranged at the time students start to register for the program. Students can take ESL classes in reading/writing, listening/speaking, grammar, pronunciation, and conversation.
The mission of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Salt Lake Technical College is to empower students by improving their English language profiency, equipping them with the essential skills to pursue technical education, enroll in academic programs, and integrate into the workforce.
Mastering ESL Scholarship - Summer 2026
The Mastering ESL Scholarship is open for Summer 2026 applications. The scholarship amount is $300, and the application opens on March 23rd and closes on May 26th. To apply, fill out the application using this link:

ESL Placement
Placement Testing:
Mondays - Thursdays: 2pm - 4pm
Fridays: 9am - 3:30pm
The test can be taken on a home computer with a microphone or at the ESL Department. For more information, visit the ESL Placement webpage.
Book Information
Students enrolled in Levels 1 through 4 will automatically receive access to an e-book for Reading/Writing and Listening/Speaking courses. (Note: No textbooks are required for Foundation-level Listening/Speaking, Conversation, and Lab courses.) A tablet or computer is highly recommended for these courses. Purchasing a physical copy of the book is optional but recommended, especially for students without access to a tablet or computer. For Pronunciation and Grammar courses, students are required to purchase a physical textbook. For Foundations Reading/Writing, students will pay a $20 textbook fee, which is automatically included in tuition. The textbook will be distributed during the third week of the semester.

International Students
International students (students on a nonimmigrant visa) must complete the International Student Application for admission through the International Student Services before being able to enroll.
The F-1 visa requires students to attend classes full-time; therefore, students must enroll in all ESL courses offered each semester.
F-1 visa international students will automatically be enrolled in the Ascension Health Insurance Plan upon registration. Please contact the International Student Office for additional details.

- There are no required minimum hours of enrollment, EXCEPT for international (F-1) students who must attend full time, which is 12 credits each semester.
- Cost for International Students: $1,295.50 (tuition & fees) + textbooks + (International Student Services Fees + Insurance)

- Students can purchase your books through SLCC Bookstore or Amazon.
- *Textbooks for Pronunciation courses will be used for two levels. (i.e. Levels 1-2 use one book and Levels 3-4 use one book.)

Steps to Enrollment
- Apply to SLCC
- Complete an online Application for Admission.
- Take ESL Placement Test
- After admission, you will receive an email in your Bruinmail from 'Scorekeeper' with information on accessing your test. You will have two weeks from receiving that email to complete your test. Once you have started your test you must complete it within 24 hours in one sitting.

- Make an Appointment with an Academic Advisor
- Meet with an advisor after completing the assessment.
