Guest Students at SLCC
What is a Guest Student?
A Guest Student is a student who is currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program at another college or university (your home institution) and wants to take one or more undergraduate courses at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC). The intent is to transfer the credits you earn at SLCC back to your home institution.
The Guest Student option applies to undergraduate courses only. It does not apply to Salt Lake Technical College (SLTech) or Workforce Training and Education courses.
Who is Eligible?
You may be a Guest Student if:
- You are currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program at another college or university
- You plan to transfer SLCC credits back to your home institution.
You are not eligible for the Guest Student program if:
- You are already a degree- or certificate-seeking student at SLCC, or
- You are not currently enrolled at another college or university.
If you are an international student, additional requirements apply. Please review information from International Student Services.
Before You Apply: Important Things to Know
Taking a few minutes to review the information below can help you avoid delays and surprises later.
Check Transferability First
Before enrolling at SLCC, talk with an academic advisor at your home institution to confirm that the courses you plan to take will transfer as expected. SLCC cannot guarantee how another institution will apply transfer credit.
Prerequisites and Overrides
SLCC does not automatically enforce prerequisites for Guest Students because we assume you have completed (or are currently completing) required coursework at your home institution. However, you are still responsible for meeting the prerequisites for any class you register for.
Here’s what to do:
- Review course prerequisites in the College Catalog.
- Submit a Guest Student Prerequisite Override Form for each course that requires prerequisites.
- Submit the override form every semester you attend as a Guest Student.
- Prerequisite overrides are not allowed for Nursing (NRSG) courses, except NRSG 1230.
Deadlines Matter
Guest Students must submit:
- The SLCC Admissions Application, and
- The Guest Student Prerequisite Override Form
By the full-term admissions deadline for the semester you plan to attend. Deadlines are listed in the Student Academic Calendar.
ALL students—including Guest Students—must meet all the deadlines as listed on the Student Academic Calendar.
What to Expect as a Guest Student
- You are classified as a non-degree seeking student at SLCC.
- You are ineligible to receive financial aid, veterans’ benefits, or transfer credit evaluation at SLCC.
- You may take up to 16 credits (cumulative) as a Guest Student. After reaching 16 credits, you must apply to SLCC as a transfer student in a degree or certificate program to continue enrolling.
- You pay regular SLCC tuition and fees as determined by their residency status.
- Placement testing and New Student Orientation are not required but you may complete them if you choose.
If you later decide to pursue a degree or certificate at SLCC, you must:
- Apply to SLCC as a transfer student in a specific program, and
- Submit a Request for Transfer Credit Evaluation.
How to Apply as a Guest Student

The admission and prerequisite override process typically takes 3 to 4 business days. Processing times may be longer during peak registration periods.
- Step 1: Complete the SLCC admissions application and select “Guest Student” as your student type. This automatically classifies you as a non-degree-seeking student.
- Step 2: Submit the Guest Student Prerequisite Override form and list the course(s) you want to take at SLCC for which prerequisites were completed at your home institution. You must complete this form for each semester and each course you need prerequisite overrides as a Guest Student.
- Step 3: Watch your Bruinmail. Once your overrides have been processed, you will receive confirmation through Bruinmail. After that you are responsible to register yourself using MySLCC during the registration period for Guest Students listed on the Student Academic Calendar.
